Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Tour

A group of 18 cadets and officers will be travelling to London in September 2010 to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. One of the highlights of the trip will be the unveiling of a memorial to Sir Keith Park, a fellow New Zealander, who commanded 11 Group at the height of battle. In order to be selected, cadets were required to make a presentation on the Battle of Britain before a panel of officers and the President of the RNZAFA South Auckland Branch.

All members of the group are now actively fundraising in order to raise the $80,000+ required to fund the costs of the trip. If you would like to support the group, please get in touch with the Squadron staff using the contact links below. We'll keep you updated on our progress here as we get closer to September.

Joining Information
The Air Training Corps is open to all physically fit males and females between the ages of 13 and 18 years. The ATC offers so many more challenging activities than other similar organisations in New Zealand. Remember - joining ATC does not place you under any obligation to join the NZ Defence Force.

To join the Air Training Corps, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Aged 13 - 15.
  • Be of sufficient health standard and physical fitness such that you are able to participate in the majority of the unit activities.

To see if the Air Training Corps is for you, come along to one of our parade nights. We parade on Monday nights from 1830 hrs (6:30 pm) until 2100 hrs (9:00 pm). For further information, please either email us or call us on 09 298 3338. We will get back to you as soon as possible. You can also download a booklet outlining some important information for new cadets.

Thanks to the huge interest from new recruits this year, 4 Squadron has completed recruiting for 2010. Our next intake is scheduled for February 2011. If you want to be placed on our waiting list, come along to the Squadron and we can arrange that for you.

What do we do at 4 Squadron?

Subjects taught at unit level include the following:

  • Aviation Studies
  • Foot and Rifle Drill
  • Adventure Training
  • General Service Knowledge
  • Cadet Force Knowledge
  • First Aid
  • Leadership
  • Navigation
  • Instructional Technique
  • Radio Communications

The Squadron holds Bushcraft camps throughout the year as an opportunity for Cadets to develop their Bushcraft skills first-hand as well as being given leadership opportunities. The Squadron also partakes in visits to military bases where cadets are given a chance to see the Armed Forces at work.

Cadets also have the opportunity to participate in regional and national camps and courses designed to further enhance cadet training already carried out at unit level. These activities include the following:

  • Junior Leaders Course
  • Senior Leaders Course
  • Advanced Leaders Course
  • National Gliding Camp
  • National Aviation Course
  • Airforce Experience Award
  • Junior Outdoor Leaders Course
  • Senior Outdoor Leaders Course
Cadets are required to pay a nominal fee to cover the annual training programme. Currently this fee is $45 inc GST per term. Discounts are available when fees are paid as a lump sum per year. We appreciate the financial demands on our families so the Squadron actively fundraises to reduce activity costs and to ensure cadets are using the best possible equipment for training. Weekend camps typically cost no more than $15 per cadet. There are options available for assisting families with paying fees - these can be discussed with the Unit Commander or the Support Committee Chairperson.
